18-Year-Old Indycar Winner Celebrates Victory With Sparkling Wine

AUTO: MAR 24 IndyCar Series - IndyCar Classic

18-year-old Colton Herta made history on Sunday (March 24) when he became the youngest driver ever to win an Indycar race. After Herta took the checkered flag at the Indycar Classic at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, he went to the podium where he planned to celebrate his victory with a bottle of non-alcoholic cider.

Instead, Herta was handed a bottle of sparkling wine, meant for runner-up Josef Newgarden. He took a sip from the bottle and immediately realized it wasn't cider.

"I didn't switch back," Herta joked later. "I took a swig and said, 'This is real!"

Herta spent most of the race sitting in third place behind Newgarden and Will Power, who led every lap until he suffered a driveshaft failure late in the race. Herta was able to pull ahead of Newgarden following a restart with just ten laps left, earning him his first career Indycar victory.

“It is cool when your first win is at Circuit of The Americas,” Herta said after the race. “It’s something I’ll look back to forever, long after my career is over.”
