Jason Smith has a very bold and slightly unusual way for Adam Silver to solve the ‘race to the bottom’ epidemic that is sweeping through the NBA, devising a new playoff format that would motivate teams at the end of the season, as well invigorating fan bases who may have stopped following their teams at the All-Star break.
Under Smith’s plan, the top seven teams from each conference would automatically make the playoffs, with the final 8 teams seeded 8-15, competing in a 8 vs. 15, 9 vs. 14, 10 vs. 13, 11 vs. 12 single elimination March Madness type quarterfinal bracket, with the winner of the play-in tournament earning the #8 and final seed in the playoffs.
