Area Cooling Centers Are Open For Those Who Need To Get Out Of The Heat

Very hot conditions will continue today with highs in the middle 90s along with a heat index just over 100 degrees. An isolated t'storm is possible late this afternoon into the evening but most areas will remain dry. Uncomfortably warm and muggy conditions will prevail overnight with lows in the middle 70s.

Due to the high heat expected today, the CBS 21 First Warning Weather team has declared today a Weather WARN Day.

Fortunately relief is on the tomorrow as a cold front brings numerous showers and t'storms to the area. A few of the storms will be capable of torrential rain which may result in some flash flooding. Gusty winds will accompany the stronger storms as well. Highs on Thursday are expected to be in the middle 80s... much cooler!

CBS 21 FIRST WARNING WEATHER FORECAST:

Today: Partly cloudy, very hot, and humid with a late day t'storm: High 96, Heat Index: 102

Tonight: Partly cloudy, uncomfortably warm, and muggy with t'storm: Low 72

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy and not as hot with numerous showers and t'storms: High 84

Tomorrow Night: Mostly cloudy with scattered t'storms: Low 68

Friday: Early clouds along with a shower, then afternoon clearing, refreshing: High 78

The World Health Organization recommends drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and sugar, and refraining from strenuous activity to stay cool. Wearing lightweight clothing and staying in the shade can also help. For those without air conditioning, opening windows at night when it's cooler and closing them during the day can help keep homes cool.

>>Cleveland Clinic Urges Parents Not To Downplay Air Quality Alerts

(Cleveland, Ohio) -- Doctors at Cleveland Clinic are urging parents not to downplay air quality alerts. They say poor air quality isn't just an inconvenience, it's a health risk, especially for children. Pulmonologists there recommend checking the air quality index frequently. It's color-coded and pulmonologists note that when it's orange or maroon, kids can develop eye irritation, coughing or shortness of breath. Apparently, children are especially sensitive to air pollution because their organs are still developing, they breathe faster and are exposed to more harmful fine particles than adults. Kids with underlying conditions, like asthma or heart disease, are even more sensitive to poor air quality.
