PennDOT Launches 'Operation Safe Stop' for School Bus Safety

PennDOT, along with local law enforcement, has launched "Operation Safe Stop" to enhance safety around school buses. This initiative aims to address unsafe driving behaviors that endanger students. Upper Allen Township police have received numerous complaints about drivers illegally passing school buses with red lights flashing and stop signs extended.

According to PennDOT, offenders caught passing a stopped school bus face fines and potential license suspension. The initiative emphasizes both education and enforcement. Officers will follow school buses on their routes to monitor compliance, particularly in areas with frequent violations.

The Pennsylvania State Police are also participating. Troopers will ride along on buses and increase patrols in high-traffic areas to raise awareness about the dangers and legal consequences of improperly passing school buses. Violators can face a $250 fine, five points on their driving record, and a 60-day license suspension.
