The American Lung Association's 2025 "State of the Air" report highlights concerning air quality in Lancaster and Berks Counties, Pennsylvania. Lancaster ranks as the 22nd most polluted city in the U.S. for short-term particle pollution, while Berks County received an "F" grade for particle pollution. The report attributes the poor air quality to lingering effects from the 2023 Canadian wildfires, which carried smoke into the region.

According to the American Lung Association, nearly half of the U.S. population lives in areas with unhealthy air pollution levels. The report indicates that 156 million people are exposed to dangerous levels of air pollution, with extreme heat and wildfires worsening the situation. The Lancaster area specifically saw an increase in unhealthy air days, averaging 8.5 days per year, up from 4.3 days in the previous report.

The report also notes that Lancaster's year-round particle pollution levels have worsened, dropping from 57th to 45th worst in the nation. Ozone pollution in Lancaster also declined, with the area receiving a C grade, down from a B last year.

The American Lung Association is urging Pennsylvania policymakers to take action to improve air quality and is calling for support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure clean air. The report suggests policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and recommends individual actions to minimize air pollution.

Kevin Stewart, director of environmental health for the American Lung Association, advises sensitive groups to monitor air quality and adjust outdoor activities accordingly. The association encourages the use of resources like AirNow.gov for up-to-date air quality readings.
