Body of Missing Child Found in Susquehanna River

The body of ten-year-old Claue Schreffler-Algofera, who went missing earlier this month, was recovered from the Susquehanna River near Northumberland on Saturday (May 17). Claue was reported missing on May 4 after she disappeared under the water while playing with her family near the Hepburn Street dam in South Williamsport.

South Williamsport Fire Chief Jeff Trammell confirmed the recovery of Claue's body. He learned about the discovery through social media before receiving official confirmation from the Lycoming County 911 Center that the body found was indeed Claue's. The young girl was a third grader at the South Williamsport Area School District.

On the day of the incident, Claue was playing in the river with two other children when she was swept away from the shore. Her mother, who was present but not in the water, attempted to rescue her daughter. Both were carried over the dam, but the mother managed to reach the shore with the help of emergency personnel. The other children also faced difficulty but returned safely to the shore.

Emergency responders conducted a three-day search for Claue's body before calling off the search. The tragic incident has left the community in mourning.
