Dauphin County Primary Elections Highlights

In Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, four candidates are vying for two open seats on the Court of Common Pleas. The primary election, taking place today (May 20), features a diverse group of candidates, each bringing unique experiences to the table. La Tasha C. Williams and Katy Kennedy-McShane are running as Democrats, while Fran Chardo and Jim Zugay have cross-filed to appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

Williams, a private defense attorney from Harrisburg, emphasizes her 25 years of courtroom experience and her commitment to addressing gun violence and supporting vulnerable communities. If elected, she would be the first Black woman to serve on the bench in Dauphin County.

Kennedy-McShane, also a defense attorney, has cross-filed and enjoys support from several Democratic officials. Her experience includes handling over 150 trials and serving as a court-appointed counsel for vulnerable adults.

Fran Chardo, the current Dauphin County District Attorney, highlights his 31 years of legal experience and his role as a quasi-judicial figure in his current position. He is endorsed by the Dauphin County Republican Committee and emphasizes his commitment to efficient case management.

Jim Zugay, a private practice attorney and former Dauphin County Recorder of Deeds, brings over 30 years of legal experience. He focuses on protecting individual rights and improving access to justice, particularly in mental health and family law matters.

The primary election will determine which candidates advance to the general election, with the winners taking office next year. The election is part of a broader municipal election cycle, with various local offices on the ballot.
