Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman believes Senate Majority Leader John Thune is open to "sincere" discussions about extending the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits once the government reopens. In a recent interview, Fetterman emphasized the importance of keeping the government open, stating, "Keeping the government open is our core responsibility as a senator." He expressed optimism that meaningful negotiations could follow the reopening to extend the ACA tax credits, which are set to expire at the end of the year.

Fetterman also supports the GOP's consideration of using the "nuclear option" to bypass the Senate filibuster, allowing a simple majority to pass a bill to reopen the government. This move could help address the ongoing shutdown standoff centered on the ACA subsidies.

According to The Hill, Fetterman acknowledged the potential impact of expiring subsidies on constituents in states won by President Trump in the 2024 election, noting that many Republicans might also seek a resolution. He stated, "I do believe many, many of their constituents are going to be impacted by the premiums."

While Fetterman supports Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, he expressed confidence in Thune's integrity, calling him "an honorable guy" who could engage in sincere conversations about the subsidy expansion. The enhanced ACA tax credits have broad public support, with a survey by KFF showing that 78 percent of adults favor extending them.
